Licorice in Korean Skincare: Species, Glabridin, and Brightening Claims

Separate Glycyrrhiza species, root extracts, glabridin, licochalcone A, and licorice-derived salts without treating them as interchangeable brightening actives.

“Licorice root” can refer to several Glycyrrhiza species and several very different cosmetic materials. A root extract does not automatically disclose glabridin, licochalcone A, glycyrrhizic acid, or dipotassium glycyrrhizate. Read the species, material, standardization, finished formula, and tested outcome separately.

Licorice is not one standardized active

K-Beauty ingredient lists may name Glycyrrhiza uralensis, Glycyrrhiza glabra, or Glycyrrhiza inflata root extract. These related species do not have identical phytochemical profiles. Plant part, origin, solvent, processing, and supplier specification can further change the resulting extract.

A general licorice-root extract is also different from an isolated or standardized constituent. Glabridin research cannot automatically validate every Glycyrrhiza uralensis extract, and a study of licochalcone A from Glycyrrhiza inflata does not establish the performance of another species.

Keep glabridin, licochalcone A, and salts distinct

Glabridin is an isoflavan studied in particular hydrophobic licorice fractions. Licochalcone A is a different compound associated especially with Glycyrrhiza inflata. Glycyrrhetinic acid, glycyrrhizic acid, and dipotassium glycyrrhizate are related licorice-derived materials with their own identities and formulation roles.

Seeing “licorice” on the front label does not reveal which of these is present or at what level. Conversely, a specifically named salt or compound should not be treated as a complete root extract.

Brightening evidence is narrower than the marketing category

Early glabridin work examined cultured pigment cells and UV-induced pigmentation in guinea-pig skin. Systematic reviews of natural hyperpigmentation ingredients describe limited human evidence and call for better standardization and longer trials. Those findings support further research, not a guarantee that every licorice toner fades a dark spot.

Hyperpigmentation also has different causes. A cosmetic product cannot diagnose melasma or another pigment condition, and visible change in a controlled study of one formula should not be assigned to an unstandardized extract in another formula.

Finished-formula trials cannot isolate every ingredient

Controlled studies have evaluated formulations containing licochalcone A for experimentally induced irritation. Other studies combine it with moisturizers, sunscreen agents, acne therapy, carnitine, or additional actives. These designs answer questions about the tested product and regimen; they do not prove that licorice root extract alone treats acne, rosacea, or dermatitis.

Read the supporting formula for niacinamide, vitamin C forms, exfoliants, sunscreen filters, humectants, fragrance, and other botanicals. Tolerance and results belong to that whole system.

A practical licorice-product checklist

  1. Confirm the species. Record whether the INCI names G. uralensis, G. glabra, or G. inflata.
  2. Name the material. Separate root extract, glabridin, licochalcone A, glycyrrhetinic acid, and salts.
  3. Look for standardization. Do not infer a marker-compound concentration from ingredient order.
  4. Match the evidence. Check species, test material, vehicle, comparator, population, and endpoint.
  5. Avoid treatment equivalence. Do not translate “natural” into drug-like potency or medical suitability.
