The most evidence-backed anti-aging active. Accelerates cell turnover, stimulates collagen synthesis, and clears acne. Requires prescription in some markets; K-Beauty introduced 0.1–0.5% OTC formulations with barrier-supporting co-ingredients (centella, ceramide) that reduced the classic retinol purge. Requires PM use and SPF the following morning.

In a small randomized split-face study, 0.25% retinol was applied overnight after a professionally administered 30% salicylic-acid peel, with the procedure repeated two weeks later. The regimen was studied under controlled procedural conditions; it does not establish that daily leave-on retinol and salicylic-acid products can be freely layered at home. Introduce them separately and follow each product label.
The evidence supports extra attention to formula, strength, timing, frequency, or tolerance rather than a universal ban.
A 12-week randomized, double-blind study found improvement in photoaged skin from one finished cream containing retinol, lactose, and glycolic acid compared with placebo. This supports that the ingredients can be formulated together under controlled conditions; it does not establish the tolerability, stability, or benefit of layering separate retinol and glycolic-acid products. Introduce leave-on actives separately and reduce frequency if irritation develops.
