“Hyaluronic acid” on a K-Beauty label can mean Hyaluronic Acid, Sodium Hyaluronate, a hydrolyzed form, a crosspolymer, or a blend sold as several molecular weights. Those names describe materials in a formula—not how many skin layers a serum reaches, how long it hydrates, or whether it will outperform a simpler moisturizer.
Start with the declared form, not the front-label number
Hyaluronic acid is a water-interacting polysaccharide. Sodium Hyaluronate is its sodium salt; hydrolyzed forms have been broken into smaller fragments; crosspolymers are chemically linked networks with different film and swelling behavior. These are related materials, but their INCI names are not interchangeable proof of molecular weight or performance.
A claim such as “eight types of HA” may count salts, hydrolysates, crosspolymers, or supplier blends. Counting names can help describe formulation strategy, but it does not disclose the amount of each material, its exact molecular-weight distribution, or the contribution of glycerin, glycols, emollients, and the vehicle around it.
Molecular weight changes behavior, but it is not a product ranking
Raman imaging of excised human skin found different localization for the tested HA sizes: lower- molecular-weight samples traveled beyond the stratum corneum more readily than the largest sample. That experiment compared specified materials under specified conditions. It does not establish a universal cutoff that can be inferred from an ingredient list.
Smaller is not automatically “better.” Larger polymers can contribute surface film, slip, viscosity, and short-term smoothing, while smaller materials may localize differently. A useful formula can use one or several forms; the relevant question is whether the complete product delivers the hydration, comfort, and finish the user needs.
Read clinical results as formula-specific evidence
A 2024 randomized trial in 36 older adults with dry lower-leg skin compared lotions containing low- and high-molecular-weight HA with a vehicle. The low-molecular-weight lotion improved capacitance more after four weeks, while the groups did not differ significantly in transepidermal water loss or the reported symptom score. That result is informative for those tested lotions and population—not every facial toner carrying a low-molecular claim.
An earlier trial compared several 0.1% HA formulations for the eye area and reported improvements in hydration and elasticity, with wrinkle-depth findings for lower molecular weights. Concentration, base formula, body site, duration, comparator, and outcome method all travel with that conclusion. A product cannot borrow the result merely by sharing “Sodium Hyaluronate” on its label.
Do not turn ingredient order into a molecular-weight estimate
INCI order may show that one declared material appears before another, subject to the flexible order allowed for lower-level ingredients. It does not reveal daltons, distribution width, purity, supplier blend composition, or hydration duration. Front-label percentages can also describe a solution or complex rather than the amount of pure HA; verify what the percentage actually names.
Compare complete lists instead of counting HA labels. Look for the broader humectant system, the emollient or occlusive support that may reduce water loss, and whether the texture fits the rest of the routine. In dry conditions, a water-rich serum may feel more complete beneath a moisturizer than when used as the final step by itself.
A practical multi-HA checklist
- Record the exact INCI names. Do not collapse salts, hydrolysates, and crosspolymers into one material.
- Ask what a number counts. “Five types” is not five concentrations or five proven depths.
- Keep molecular-weight claims attached to documentation. The label alone usually does not disclose daltons.
- Compare the whole hydration system. Include glycerin, glycols, beta-glucan, emollients, and occlusives.
- Judge the finished product in use. Comfort, pilling, climate, and the next routine layer matter.
