Polyglutamic acid in skincare usually refers to microbial poly-γ-glutamic acid or a salt such as Sodium Polyglutamate. It is a water-loving polymer, not a conventional exfoliating acid. Claims that it holds “5,000 times its weight” or outperforms hyaluronic acid need the exact material, method, conditions, and finished formula.
The name sounds like an acid, but the role is different
Poly-γ-glutamic acid is a polymer built from glutamic-acid units. In cosmetics it is generally used for humectant, film-forming, or formulation properties rather than the low-pH exfoliation associated with glycolic, lactic, or salicylic acid.
The ingredient list may say Polyglutamic Acid, Sodium Polyglutamate, or another specified form. Salt form, molecular weight, concentration, pH, and the surrounding formula can change solubility, viscosity, film behavior, and water interaction.
Put the “5,000×” number back into its experiment
Very large water-absorption figures are often associated with a particular gamma-PGA hydrogel or measurement setup. Hydrogels, powders, solutions, raw-material blends, and finished creams are not the same test article. Humidity, salts, pH, crosslinking, and polymer molecular weight can change the result.
A gravimetric water-uptake ratio is not a clinical hydration percentage, duration estimate, or direct comparison with a hyaluronic-acid serum. Without a shared method and matched formulation, “holds more water” is not a reliable product ranking.
Hyaluronidase findings do not prove preserved skin HA
Some gamma-PGA research and patents discuss hyaluronidase inhibition. An enzyme assay or a specially prepared material does not by itself show that an over-the-counter serum preserves a person's dermal hyaluronic acid or produces longer hydration than another product.
Hyaluronic acid and gamma-PGA can coexist as film-forming or water-interacting polymers, but “synergy” requires a relevant comparison of the finished combination against its components. Co-occurrence on an ingredient list only shows that both were declared.
Current skin evidence is preparation-specific
Recent studies have examined a high-molecular-weight gamma-PGA from a specific Bacillus subtilis strain in keratinocytes and a reconstructed skin model. Other work compares experimental gamma-PGA materials in model cream systems. These studies can support ingredient development but are not controlled human evidence for every K-Beauty serum.
Research using gamma-PGA as a microneedle or delivery polymer also answers a drug-delivery question, not whether ordinary topical Sodium Polyglutamate performs the same way. Route and formulation technology must stay attached to the conclusion.
A practical polyglutamic-acid checklist
- Read the INCI form. Distinguish Polyglutamic Acid, Sodium Polyglutamate, and specialized hydrogels.
- Do not treat it as an exfoliant. Product pH and the complete formula determine exfoliating behavior.
- Ask what “5,000×” measured. Identify material state, humidity, pH, salts, and comparison method.
- Verify production claims. Do not infer natto, soy, vegan status, or allergen status from the polymer name.
- Require combination evidence. Co-listing with hyaluronic acid does not demonstrate synergy.
